The car industry shares one thing with the mobile and telecommunications industry: Despite the competition, only very few truly emerge as giant players. - Check out the right places in search of the car you want. Nothing beats a personal contact in the US who can recommend you to a trusted classic car seller or dealer. The next best thing is to check out car clubs where you can find members who are collectors and are willing to sell.
- Don’t forget the inspection. Ever. A car buying checklist or an inspection checklist is handy to ensure you got all things covered. It’s always a tricky matter if you’re buying a car online but if you have to, then make sure you got the paperwork sorted out. At the very least, the classic car you’re buying should be registered to the seller otherwise you’ll have to pay extra charges for application of a title. The identification numbers on the tag of the car should also match the one on the title.
An important check is the rust damage on the trunk, floor and sides of the car. While you can commission repairs, rust is rust and it can eventually lower the quality of your vehicle especially if you intend to resell it.Check also other parts such as the car’s upholstery, mirror, side panels, as well as paint peelings, dents in the body and misalignment in the wheel. These little details add to the cost of repair and restoration so the least damage and items to be repaired, the better. Of course, don’t forget to take the car out for a drive to check on the motor.
3 . Be smart about shipping. A major consideration when it comes to classic cars shipping is exposure to water and salty air. Cars are transported in ship cargo carriers and you don’t want your investment to be in contact with either water or salt air. Make sure there are no lose parts when you pack your car. Commission a professional and reliable packing company who will do a good job of protecting both the interior and exterior of your car so that it arrives in good condition.
A classic car, much like (or perhaps even more) a new model, is an investment. For the price that you’re getting, make sure that you’ve carefully checked all the necessary parts before signing the paperwork. And just as you’re willing to pay for the car itself, don’t scrimp on the shipping and transport arrangements. Consider it part of protecting your investment.
